The New Orleans Saints are looking to get under the salary cap for the 2021 NFL season, and it seems one of the ways the team will try to do that is by trading defensive tackle Malcom Brown.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Saints are actively shopping Brown and have already had talks with several teams about a possible deal. The trade would save them around $5 million in cap space.

If New Orleans fails to find a trade partner, they could also release Brown and get salary-cap relief as he doesn’t have more guaranteed money on the three-year, $15 million contract he signed back in 2019.

In his two years with the Saints, Brown made 29 starts. He contributed with 61 tackles, three sacks, seven QB hits, and one fumble recovery during that time.

The Saints have a lot of work to do in order to get cap compliant before the new league year starts. They are almost $70 million above the projected $180 million cap for 2021, so Brown might just be the first of the several players to be out of New Orleans in the coming weeks.

Malcom Brown started his NFL career as the New England Patriots’ first-round pick in 2015. He helped the Patriots win two Super Bowls while totaling 8.5 sacks and 186 tackles in the process.
