Portland Timbers announced on Tuesday that their midfielder Eryk Williamson suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the MLS season. The U.S. international is scheduled to have surgery to repair the damage this week and is expected to be out for at least nine months while recovering.

This is the second time Williamson has torn his ACL in less than two years. He suffered the same injury back in 2021 on his left knee.

Losing Williamson is a tough blow for the Timbers and adds to a disappointing start to the 2023 MLS campaign. Portland only won one of their first seven games to start the season and are currently at No. 12 in the Western Conference.

“We will support Eryk both on and off the field during his recovery process, and we are confident that he will make a full recovery in reestablishing himself within the team again next season,” Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy said in a team-released statement.

Eryk Williamson spent his entire professional career with the Timbers, making 70 appearances since making his MLS debut in 2018. He has four goals and 17 assists to his name while helping the team win MLS is Back Tournament in 2020.

Williamson received his first United States men’s national team call-up in 2022 and has since played six games for the senior team.
