According to Brescia club president Massimo Cellino, rising star Sandro Tonali turned down the chance to join the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United in favor of a move to AC Milan. The 20-year-old player is a lifelong supporter of the Serie A club.

After enjoying an emphatic season at Serie B club Brescia, Tolani became a top transfer target across Europe. In fact, AC Milan’s fierce rivals Inter also expressed interest in the midfielder. As Cellino explained, “I know that [Inter CEO] Beppe Marotta really wanted Tonali, and that [Inter head coach] Antonio Conte appreciated him, so I think his agent had agreed terms with Inter.”

“He was determined and convinced that he was going to Inter, but all this time dragged on and it was practically the start of the new season with still nothing happening. As soon as Milan showed real interest, he did not want to listen to any other options. I also have a historically good rapport with Milan and we reached an agreement with [Milan technical director] Paolo Maldini quite quickly.”

Tonali’s deal with Milan is expected to be wrapped up within the next few days, with midfielder joining on an initial loan for $12 million and an option to buy for $18 million, with another $12 million in potential add-ons.
