Tottenham Hotspur managed to make a significant addition to their squad just hours before the transfer window in England closed down on Friday. The club announced that they have acquired Welsh international defender Joe Rodon from Swansea, signing the 22-year-old defender from Championship side Swansea City.

Reportedly, Tottenham paid $14 million for Rodon, while Swansea will also be entitled to another $5 million in add-ons.

Despite making several high profile moves, including the addition of Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon, Tottenham felt like they needed another center back to increase the depth at the position. They pursued a number of options, including Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar and Chelsea’ Antonio Rudiger, but came short.

Premier League side turned their attention to Rodon as an alternative, but the deal looked unlikely to happen. Swansea was firmly holding to a $23 million evaluation of talented Welshman and believed they could even get more in January if he continues to progress.

Tottenham decided to make one last push in recent days, and it proved successful as Swansea ended up coming down from their original asking price. It is believed that Rodon’s wish to make a move to Premier League played a role in this.

“It hasn’t really hit me yet,” said Rodon after the move was made official. “It’s a massive honor and a massive club, I can’t wait to get started.”

Joe Rodon is a product of Swansea City’s youth academy, having joined the club in 2005 as a seven-year-old child. He made his professional debut for the club in 2018 and has since played 54 games in Swansea’s jersey.

Rodon is also a regular with Wales on the international level and has seven caps with the national team to his name.
