Tottenham and Man United Lead the Race for Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon

After an impressive loan stint with Sevilla, Real Madrid’s left-back Sergio Reguilon is set to make a big move this summer. According to ESPN, Reguilon is subject to bids by Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, and there is a strong possibility that he will leave Santiago Bernabeu in upcoming days.

Both clubs are reportedly willing to spend around $35 million for the player, with Real being content with the price. Reguilon already has an agreement with Man Utd over a five-year contract, but Tottenham is believed to be the favorite to eventually land the 23-year-old player.

While Reguilon prefers a move to Old Trafford, United doesn’t want to accept Real’s demand to insert a buy-back clause in the player’s contract. Tottenham, on the other hand, doesn’t have a problem with the request, which puts them in pole position.

Sergio Reguilon had a breakthrough season with Sevilla in 2019/20, playing 38 games in all competitions and helping the club win the Europa League title. Good performances brought him a call-up for Spain’s national team, and he already made a debut against Ukraine earlier this month.

However, with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy operating the left side, there is no place for Reguilon at Santiago Bernabeu, which is why Real elected to cash in on him while the price is high. But aware of his massive potential, the club insists on the buy-back clause and is unlikely to leave him without it.

At Tottenham, Reguilon would challenge Ben Davis for the starting spot, and presumably win the competition considering Welshman’s inconsistency in recent seasons.

Manchester United, on the other hand, is well covered on left-back position with Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot. This is why they are probably not so aggressive to land Reguilon and rejected the buy-back clause.
