Tottenham Hotspurs midfielder Eric Dier will remain sidelined until next year to recover from a surgery he did this week to remove his appendix.

The 24-year-old did not appear in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Burnley after he was diagnosed with appendicitis, a potentially fatal problem that affects the appendix. He received an immediate treatment and will remain sidelined until he is properly cured.

Dier played in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Barcelona at the Camp Nou but fell ill mid-week with abdominal pains. He was immediately diagnosed with the issue and treated. Spurs confirmed Dier’s commencement to rehab and said the England International will return to Spurs’ training in January.

“He will now undergo a period of recovery before commencing rehabilitation and it is expected he will return to training with the squad in January. Along with our medical staff, we wish to thank the NHS for their excellent treatment of Eric.”

In Dier’s absence, Spurs’ coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded 18-year-old Oliver Skipp whom he praised heavily after the game.

“Fantastic, fantastic, I think he played like a 30-year-old man,” the coach said of Skipp. “So relaxed, trying to play forward and trying to give the team what the team needs, plenty of energy, full of energy, I am so proud of him.”
