U.S. international back Fabian Johnson is ending his stint with Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach after six seasons. The club announced on Monday that Johnson’s contract is expiring this summer and that he won’t be offered a new one.

Johnson won’t be the only player leaving Monchengladbach this summer, as midfielder Tobias Strobl is also on his way out after agreeing on a deal with FC Augsburg.

The club’s sporting director Max Eberl confirmed the news in a statement for Borussia’s social media.”Tobias Strobl has informed us that he would like to join FC Augsburg at the end of the season. We have also reached an agreement together with Fabian Johnson to let his contract run out.”

Fabian Johnson joined Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014 and has since played 140 games with the club while scoring 15 goals in all competition. Johnson was an integral part of the team during his first few seasons with the club, but he lost his place in the starting lineup in recent seasons. The 32-year-old played only seven games in 2019/20, which probably influenced his and club’s “agreement” to move on.

There are speculations that Johnson now might decide to come to MLS, where there is an interest in his services for some time now. He was previously linked with FC Cincinnati, but the move never came to fruition.

If Johnson manages to find a club where he will play, we could also see him in a USMNT jersey again. He last played with the U.S. national team in 2017 but recently had talks with head coach Gregg Berhalter about a possible return.
