A wide array of UEFA-affiliated European soccer clubs have expressed their disapproval of FIFA’s new plan for the World Cup tournament, which involves the implementation of a World Cup every two years rather than every four years as is the current case.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed a keen interest in introducing this new format as of late and is believed to have attained the support of several key members of the FIFA organization, with multiple members expressing their approval during interviews. Among those in support of this new notion is FIFA Chief of Global Football Development and former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The European Club Association, which represents 234 clubs across Europe, has expressed disappointment in this new movement, expressing much concern over the “destructive” impact that an increase in international competitions would have on the sport at the club level.

The EFC, chaired by Paris Saint-Germain owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi, stated that it believes that there has been a breach of a memorandum that governs the relationship between clubs and FIFA, particularly when it comes to the discussion of any significant changes.
