Last week, the 30-year-old UFC featherweight and lightweight world champion Conor McGregor tweeted: “Hey guys, quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as “Mixed Martial Art” today. I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in the competition. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!”

The UFC fandom was stunned by the news, but this is not the first time McGregor has set the internet ablaze with a retirement announcement.

Back in April 2016, the Irishman infamously tweeted: “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya’s later.” As it turned out, McGregor had no serious plans of retiring – he was only cleverly using his star power to get the UFC deal he wanted at the time.

This time, though, he seems serious, saying that he had decided to call it a day after having won 21 of his 25 MMA fights. Unfortunately, the announcement came almost at the same time with news of an ongoing investigation after accusations of sexual assault in his native Ireland in December last year.

The notorious retiree-to-be went down in history as the first fighter to hold two belts at two weight classes at the same time. After a short but brilliant career, McGregor retires with a huge net worth of $99m.
