Last Saturday, New York’s Madison Square Garden was the center of the boxing world after an unexpected turn of events managed to surprise everyone and leave Anthony Joshua’s fans speechless.
The US fighter Andy Ruiz Junior fought a victory over the champion Joshua, bringing him his first defeat as a professional and claiming the IBF, WBA and WBO World Heavyweight titles. Joshua’s bid to end his US debut with a dramatic victory ended in misery as Ruiz recorded a monster upset.
A stunning fight that caught everyone off guard, it is maybe one of the most shocking turnarounds in the history of boxing – even bigger than the Buster Douglas victory over Mike Tyson in 1990.
After two relatively even rounds, things heated up in the third with Ruiz being sent to the floor, but after that Joshua dropped twice which were the second and third drop in his career. Ruiz knocked down Joshua twice more in the seventh round and then the fight was ended by the referee.
Anthony Joshua said that he was beaten by a good fighter and that it will be interesting to see how far he goes.
