NBA executive vice president of communications Mike Bass announced on Wednesday morning that unvaccinated players who miss games because of local vaccination requirements in New York City and San Francisco will not be compensated for the games they miss. “Any player who elects not to comply with local vaccination mandates will not be paid for games that he misses,” Bass confirmed in a statement.

New York City’s vaccination mandate stipulates that one must have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination shot in order to enter a stadium. San Francisco, on the other hand, requires a person to be fully vaccinated in order to be allowed entry. This order affects the Brooklyn Nets and the Golden State Warriors, NBA teams based in New York City and San Francisco, respectively.

Kylie Irving was missing from the Nets’ media day at the Barclays Center on Monday because of New York City’s new order, while Andrew Wiggins was unable to attend the Warriors’ media day, simply commenting that his vaccination status was “private” upon being questioned about his absence.

The New York Knicks, which is also subject to a local vaccination mandate, announced that the entire organization is already fully vaccinated, including the players.
