After a tumultuous 2018 which saw the United States’ mens soccer team miss out on the World Cup, two coaching changes, and plenty of drama within the squad, 2019 is off to a better start for the American men.

The United States beat Costa Rica 2-0 in a friendly match on Saturday night at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.

This was the USMNT’s second win of the week after they defeated Panama 3-0 on Monday.

While some of the biggest players on each team were absent from this match due to club duty in Europe, new USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter saw plenty to be glad about on Saturday night.

Midfielder Sebastian Lletget, who came on as a 62nd minute substitute, scored the first goal of the game in the 80th minute to make it 1-0 USA.

Lleglet then assisted a Paul Ariola goal in the 88th minute to put the nail in the coffin for the United States.

This game provided quality experience for many USMNT players against a testy opponent in Los Ticos. Berhalter and the USMNT will be happy to have grabbed a deserved win and to have kept Costa Rica off of the scoreboard.

The USMNT returns to action on March 26th with a friendly against Chile.
