The United States men’s national team is out of the 2024 Copa América. The USMNT failed to get out of the group stage of the tournament they are hosting after a 0-1 loss to Uruguay on Monday night.

USMNT finished with just three points in Group C, which was not enough to get the spot in the knockout stage.

After an encouraging win against Bolivia in the opener, USMNT surprisingly stumbled in the second match of the group stage with a loss to Panama. This left the Americans in need of a win against Uruguay to remain in the tournament.

However, the USMNT never properly threatened their opponents. Playing without suspended Tim Weah and seeing Folarin Balogun exit the game due to injury in the first half, Gregg Berhalter’s team lacked the attacking edge needed to get a positive result.

Uruguay, on the other hand, played with composure and patience, which was rewarded in the 66th minute. USMNT’s goalie Matt Turner saved Ronald Araújo’s header but ended up deflecting the ball to Mathías Olivera, who didn’t have a hard time finding the net.

After falling behind, USMNT went into all-out-attack mode but lacked more creativity and determination to find a badly needed goal.

With a win against USMNT, Uruguay finished at the top of Group C with three wins out of three matches. Panama, who got a 1-3 win over Bolivia, finished second and will make it to the knockout stage as well.

USMNT, on the other hand, will have to do some soul searching after a disappointing 2024 Copa América campaign if they want to avoid similar disappointment at the 2026 World Cup.
