United States international right-back Reggie Cannon left behind his home country on Thursday, agreeing to a transfer deal with Portuguese top flight side Boavista.

Boavista, who will reportedly pay Cannon’s previous club FC Dallas a $3 million transfer fee, had established himself as one of the MLS’s top young talents in recent seasons.

In addition, Cannon has made 10 appearances for the US Men’s National Team since making his debut in 2018, and is considered to be a favorite for a potential 2022 World Cup spot.

The Chicago native, who joined FC Dallas back in 2017, was linked to several potential moves ahead of last season, but signed a four-year contract extension with the MLS club. However, it appears that Cannon is now ready to take his talents to Portugal, which is considered to have one of Europe’s top non-Big Five leagues.

Boavista, located in the city of Porto, finished in 12th place in Liga NOS last season and will be looking to improve on what was considered a disappointing campaign. Cannon is considered to be the favorite to step in and start for the team at the right-back position, even if it takes him a few weeks to get up to speed in his new home.

Boavista will open its season on Saturday, September 19th against Nacional.
