The United States Men’s National Team was held to a 1-1 draw against Mexico in Glendale, Arizona, on Wednesday night, thereby extending their unbeaten streak against their neighbors in the south to five.

Mexico proved to be the dominant force early on in the contest, and while the game remained goalless going into the halftime break, “El Tri” grabbed the lead through a Uriel Antuna goal 10 minutes after the restart.

While Mexico came close to scoring a second goal when Carlos Rodriguez’s shot hit the crossbar, the United States made a rapid counterattack, FC Dallas striker Jesús Ferreira putting the ball into Mexico’s net in the 81st minute. This goal proved to be the only shot on target that the USMNT was able to make throughout the 90 minutes.

“It’s important,” U.S. interim coach Anthony Hudson said of the hard-fought draw. “It allows us to go into the summer with a much better understanding of what we’re going to face and also a better idea of the players.”

Because the game was played outside the FIFA international window, club teams from around the world were unable to release their players for the match. Instead, both teams had to resort to using players from their domestic leagues.
