USMNT star Giovanni Reyna kicked off the new season in a perfect way. Reyna not only got to start for Borussia Dortmund against Borussia Monchengladbach, but he also gave an important contribution to the 3-0 win by scoring his first-ever Bundesliga goal.

Reyna scored in the 35th minute to give Dortmund a 1-0 lead. The 17-year-old player used a confusion in the penalty box and delivered on an intuitive assist from another young star Jude Bellingham.

This wasn’t the end of Reyna’s impact on the game, as he was also the key player on Dortmund’s second goal. The American midfielder carried the ball from his own half to the opponent’s 18-yard box before being taken down. The referee awarded the penalty, which was converted by Erling Braut Haaland.

Giovanni Reyna already had a strong start of the new campaign, scoring four goals during Dortmund’s friendly matches. He then added another one during the DFB Pokal win over Duisburg last week.

“I think that I am ready to take on a bigger role, and I think you’ve seen that in the first few games I started,” said Reyna, who became the second-youngest American scorer Bundesliga after Christian Pulisic, after the game. “It’s gonna be a tough season with a lot of games. It’s really about how I can help the team and score goals and give assists.”
