Despite entering Wednesday’s friendly against El Salvador without their top players, United States men’s national team managed to deliver an impressive and encouraging performance. USMNT didn’t just get a big 6-0 win, but also dominated their opponents in a way that was rarely seen before under head coach Gregg Berhalter.

After quiet first part of the match, D.C. United’s Paul Arriola opened the flood in the 17th minute with a powerful strike that saw him get a few nifty moves on El Salvador’s defenders. Three minutes later, it was 2-0 for USMNT, as Orlando City SC winger Chris Mueller also found a way to put the ball behind goalie Henry Hernandez.

It turned out that this was just the beginning when USMNT scored three more goals in a matter of 10 minutes. Mueller scored his second goal of the game, while LA Galaxy’s Sebastian Lletget and Toronto FC Ayo Akinola added one each to make it 5-0.

In the second half, USMNT took their foot off the gas, but that didn’t stop them from adding another goal to the tally. New RB Salzburg signing Brenden Aaronson took the pass from Lletget in the penalty area and had an easy job finding the back of the net.

Other than dominating on the scoreboard, USMNT dominated in most other categories as well. They had 22 shots on goal compared to El Salvador’s three while also making 182 passes more than their opponents.

“I believe in that when we train the way we do, we will be able to perform in the game, and the guys showed that tonight.” said Berhalter after the game.
