Van Exel Returns to Atlanta as Assistant Coach

Nick Van Exel has accepted the role of assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks, the team announced on Wednesday. This comes after Van Exel spent two years working as a scout with the Dallas Mavericks.

This will mark Van Exel’s second tenure with the Hawks. Previously, the former All-Star served as a player development instructor at the franchise from 2010 to 2012.

In the opinion of Hawks coach Nate McMillan, Van Exel will be of great service to the team when it comes to developing the team’s young talent. “Since his playing career ended, Nick has been very successful in helping develop young guards for the teams he’s worked with, including several that have turned into All-Stars.”

Van Exel will have a large array of talent at his disposal when he arrives at the Hawks. Currently at the front line is 22-year-old point guard Trae Young along with fresh talents such as De’Andre Hunter, Kevin Huerter, and Cam Reddish.

During his 13-year playing career, Van Exel played with six teams. During his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, he earned a spot in the 1998 All-Star Game.
