Cornerback Orlando Scandrick’s stint with the Washington Redskins didn’t last long. Although he signed a two-year, $7 million deal in March, Scandrick was released on Tuesday. This certainly comes as a surprise, since Scandrick spent the entire training camp in a role of a starting cornerback.

The reason why the Redskins decided to move on from the 31-year-old was the emergence of their young cornerbacks according to the team’s head coach Jay Gruden.

“It had nothing to do with his play,” – Gruden told the media. “It was more of the rookies’ emergence… it also gives Orlando time to get on another team.”

“If it doesn’t work out we still have time to make a move,” – he added.

On the cornerback position Washington Redskins now only have one player in Josh Norman who has experience as a starter. It looks like the young CBs including Quinton Dunbar and Fabian Moreau convinced the coaching staff enough through training camp to get an opportunity.

Orlando Scandrick was drafted fifth overall by the Dallas Cowboys in 2008 and went on to start 69 games in the nine years he spent with the team. Scandrick’s NFL stats include 406 total tackles, 11.5 sacks, eight interceptions, 63 deflected passes, eight forced fumbles and one defensive touchdown.
