It looks like the Vancouver Whitecaps are looking to make a big splash ahead of the 2021 MLS season. According to multiple reports from Europe, the Whitecaps are interested in signing FC Porto attacking midfielder Otavio and have engaged in negotiations with the player.

Otavio is out of a contract this summer, and the MLS team could get the 25-year-old Brazilian without having to pay a transfer fee. Their current offer includes a $5 million signing bonus and salary of $2 million per year.

However, the Whitecaps are facing a big competition for Otavio’s signature. Several high-profile clubs from Europe, including Seria A powerhouses Milan and Napoli, and Premier League side Leicester City, are also interested.

Otavio started his career in native Brazil with Internacional. He made 39 appearances for the club between 2012 and 2014, scoring six goals and contributing with three assists.

In 2014, Otavio joined Porto in a transfer that was reportedly worth around $7 million. He spent the majority of his first two seasons in Portugal on a loan with Vitoria Guimaraes, where he established himself as one of the most exciting young midfielders in the country.

Otavio finally got an opportunity with Porto’s first team ahead of the 2017-18 season and has since been an important part of the lineup. He helped the club win two Primeira Liga titles while also earning a place in Primeira Liga Team of the Year for the 2019-20 season.

In 167 games with Porto in all competitions, Otavio scored 17 goals and has 45 assists.
