Veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas has faced another obstacle in his attempt to resurrect his NBA career. Thomas, who signed a one-year deal with Washington Wizards during the offseason, underwent thumb surgery on Wednesday and might not be ready for the start of the NBA season.

Wizards confirmed the news, saying that Thomas suffered the injury on Monday during his workouts. He is projected to be sidelined six to eight weeks while recovering.

“This was an unfortunate setback for Isaiah, but with his resolve and the top care he will receive from our medical team, we expect him to make a full recovery,” – said Wizards’ general manager Tommy Sheppard in a statement. “In the meantime, he will continue to mentor our young guards and have a positive impact on the team as we start training camp.”

After having an MVP-worthy campaign with Boston Celtics during 2016/17 NBA season, Isaiah Thomas saw his career taking a step back due to hip injury he has been struggling with for the past few years. In the last two seasons, Thomas made only 44 appearances in NBA (15 as a starter) while playing for Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Denver Nuggets.

Thomas hoped that Nuggets could offer him an opportunity to get more playing time last season, but things didn’t turn out that way as the team was aiming for a deep playoff run. He ended up being demoted to a bench warmer and was mostly DNP in the second part of the season.

After considering his options this offseason, Thomas agreed to a one-year deal with Wizards to try his luck once again. Things haven’t started off well, but Thomas overcame bigger obstacles in his career. Let’s hope he can do the same once again.
