Wolverhampton Wanderers are within reach of a Champions League qualifying spot after their tight 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park, Birmingham.

The struggling home side showed resolve throughout the 90 minutes, making life difficult for the visiting Wolves. Possession was split evenly, with Wolves holding onto the ball 52% of the time, while both sides had their fair share of shots on goal.

Throughout the first half, Villa’s defense remained impenetrable. It was only in the 62nd minute that a brilliant team effort from Wolves led to Jonny laying the ball off for Leander Dendoncker, who finally broke the deadlock. Going a goal down did not seem to dampen Aston Villa’s spirits, however, as the underdogs continued to pressure the visitors until the final whistle.

This result provided Wolves with a valuable three points, as they now rise to fifth place in the league standings. For Aston Villa, on the other hand, this home loss dealt them a massive blow to their survival chances. Villa is now in 19th place on the league standings. While tied on points with the 17th placed West Ham and 18th placed Bournemouth, Villa trails due to their inferior goal difference.
