The Wolverhampton Wanderers have signed forward Matheus Cunha on loan from Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian will arrive at the Molineux on January 1, 2023, and will play with the Premier League side until the end of the season. The Wolves revealed that the player could remain at the club on a permanent deal through 2027 should certain clauses be triggered.

Having arrived in Madrid in August 2021, Cunha struggled to break into Atletico’s starting 11. He has made 40 appearances for Atletico, mostly from the bench, scoring six goals in the process.

Although his tenure at Atletico may not have lived up to expectations, Cunha has featured notably on the international stage. He made his Brazil debut in September 2021 during a World Cup qualifying game against Chile and won a gold medal with Brazil’s under-23 side at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Before joining Atletico, Cunha played in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig from 2018 to 2020 before spending a season with Hertha Berlin. He began his career with Swiss club Sion.

Wolves will be hoping that Cunha can bolster their attack and help them climb out of last place on the Premier League table. Currently, Wolves have scored just eight Premier League goals to date, making them the league’s lowest scorers.
