Carolina Panthers’ new offensive coordinator Joe Brady already identified the player he believes will be “critical” to the team’s success in 2020. And it’s safe to say that his choice surprised many.

During a conference call with reporters on Thursday, Brady said that he expects Panthers’ underachieving but talented wideout Curtis Samuel to be a key element for Panthers’ offense this season.

“Curtis is going to be critical to our success,” said Brady. “I say that I wish I could have an opportunity to be out at practices and what not, and Curtis is the one I can’t wait to see him do what he does best. I think Curtis is a playmaker. He fits the mold of what we’re looking for in this type of offense. A guy that you can utilize all around the field.”

Samuel finished the last season with career-high 54 receptions for 627 yards and six touchdowns. While these are solid numbers, Panthers expect more from the player they view as their No.1 wideout.

Still, Brady believes Samuel can take the next step this year and have his breakthrough season.

“I’m excited for him to take the next leap. And I know that he wants that,” he added.

Curtis Samuel has totaled 108 receptions for 1,236 yards and 11 TDs since entering the NFL as Panthers’ second round pick in 2017.
