New York Yankees first baseman Luke Voit is headed to the injured list for the second time in 2019 MLB season. This time, however, he might spend more than 10 days there.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Wednesday that Voit suffered a sports hernia injury and might be sidelined through September if he undergoes surgery. The other option for the 28-year-old is treating the injury on a day-to-day basis.

Voit got hurt on Tuesday in a 4-2 loss to Arizona Diamondbacks and was forced to leave the game in the fifth inning. He underwent MRI after the game, which ended up showing the severity of his injury.

“Over the next 24 hours, we’ll determine a course of action,” – said Boone. “Hopefully it’s a shorter-term situation with Luke, but worst-case, we’ll hopefully have him back before the end of the season, and we have all the people capable of withstanding that.”

Back in early July, Luke Voit spent 10 days on the injured list due to an abdominal strain. Although Yankees can’t confirm whether this injury is connected to the sports hernia, Boone believes that they might be correlated.

“That’s possible that there’s some correlation there,” – Boone added. “This is something that frankly goes back before that [July 2 injury].

Voit played 94 games with Yankees this season and is currently on .278 batting average with 54 RBIs and 19 home runs.
