The post Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence Set for Further Tests on Shoulder Injury appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>“It’s bothering me,” Lawrence said of his injured shoulder following the Jaguars’ 30-12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccanneers on Sunday. “Hopefully nothing major but, yeah, it’s bugging me right now.” The quarterback’s shoulder was injured when he was shoved by Bucs linebacker Yaya Diaby as he stretched and dove during a fourth-and-1 play late in the third quarter. Lawrence landed on his right shoulder out of bounds.
While the Jaguars remain top of the AFC South, they’ll be desperate to end a four-game losing streak and putting some daylight between them and the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts. Currently, all three teams are tied at 8-7, however, the Jags remain on top by virtue of tiebreakers against their two division rivals.

]]>Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Jaguars’ head coach Dough Pederson said that Lawrence is dealing with a high ankle sprain. The 24-year-old is expected to undergo further testing that will determine the full extent of the injury.
When asked about how the ankle issue will affect Lawrence’s availability, Pederson said that there is currently no timetable for his return but didn’t completely rule out the possibility of him playing in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns.
“I’m not going to put that timetable on Trevor,” Pederson said. “I’m not going to put him in a box like that, but we’ll see how he is in a couple of days.”
Lawrence suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter of the Bengals game after left tackle Walker Little stepped on his ankle. He had to be helped off the field and didn’t finish the game, being replaced by backup C.J. Beathard.
Trevor Lawrence took another step forward in his third season as a pro, completing a career-high 67.9 percent of his passes while throwing for 3,004 yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. The Jags were considered one of the favorites to get the No. 1 seed in the AFC before, but the loss to the Bengals and Lawrence’s injury makes that scenario highly unlikely at the moment.

]]>The post Jaguars Will Reportedly Place a Franchise Tag on TE Evan Engram appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Engram signed on a one-year, $9 million deal with the Jags ahead of the 2022 season and delivered a productive campaign that saw him get career-high 73 receptions and 766 receiving yards alongside four touchdowns. If he ends up signing the franchise tag, he will earn $11.345 million in 2023.
Despite the tag, the Jags remain interested in getting a long-term deal done with Engram. The player seems to be open to this option as well, considering how well he fits in the team’s offense, so don’t be surprised if the two sides come to an agreement before the season starts.
Evan Engram was drafted into the NFL by the New York Giants in 2017 with the 27th overall pick. He set the franchise record for most touchdown catches by a rookie (6) in his first season as a pro. Engram continued to be a prominent figure in the team’s offense, even earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2020, although he never felt comfortable in New York. The Giants reportedly offered him a new deal last March, but he opted for a fresh start in Jacksonville.
In his 82 games in the league, Engram made 335 catches for 3,594 yards and 20 TDs.

]]>It didn’t start pretty for the Eagles, as the Jags, led by former Philly coach Doug Pederson, getting to a 0-14 lead in the first quarter. However, Philadelphia turned things around in the second quarter thanks to reckless play by Jacksonville’s second-year signal-caller Trevor Lawrence.
Lawrence fumbled the ball twice in the second quarter, giving the Eagles a great field position. Philly used both chances to reach the endzone, while adding an extra TD on one of their possession to make it 20-14.
Both teams were uninspired in the second half, which opened up with three punts. Then, Lawrence entered in a series of mistakes once again, throwing an interception, which resulted in a field goal for the Eagles, and fumbling the ball, which led to Philly TD.
The Jags managed to make it close with a touchdown of their own midway through the fourth quarter but couldn’t complete the comeback in time due to another fumble by Lawrence.
The Eagles were led by the running back Myles Sanders, who had 134 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on the night. Quarterback Jalen Hurts had a rough night, throwing for 204 yards and an interception, although he did get one TD score with his legs.
With the win, the Philadelphia Eagles secured their best start of the season since 2004, when they started 7-0. On the other hand, the Jags fell to 2-2.

]]>The post Jags Release Veteran DT Malcom Brown appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Brown started all 17 games last season and contributed with career-high 57 tackles. He also had 2.0 sacks and one pass deflection.
With the release of Brown, the Jags will save $3 million against the cap but will also get $4.5 million in dead money. However, it seemed that Jacksonville didn’t mind the cost if it meant the opportunity to give their younger player a more prominent role.
The team’s young guys DaVon Hamilton and Jay Tufele are reportedly having a great training camp, and it appears the Jags are convinced they can man the position without a veteran presence. Hamilton is a former third-round pick from 2020 who has 76 tackles and 2.0 sacks on his resume. Jacksonville drafted Tufele last year, but the USC product had limited playing time in 2021 due to injuries.
Malcom Brown entered the league as a first-round pick by the New England Patriots back in 2015. He spent four years with the Pats, mainly as a starter, and helped the franchise win two Super Bowls. Brown also spent two seasons with the New Orleans Saints before being traded to Jacksonville ahead of the 2021 season.

]]>The post Jaguars and LT Cam Robinson Agree to 3-Year, $54 Million Extension appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Reportedly, Robinson landed a three-year deal that will pay him $54 million. The 26-year-old player was previously set to play on a franchise tag that would pay him $16.7 million in 2022.
The Jags would have probably considered taking a left tackle in the upcoming draft if they hadn’t managed to hammer out an agreement with Robinson. The 2022 class has several standout OTs including Alabama’s Evan Neal and NC State’s Ikem Ekwonu. However, now Jacksonville will likely focus on other positions of need and look to upgrade on the defensive side of the ball.
The Jaguars drafted Cam Robinson in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was named the team’s starting LT in his rookie season and proved to be a reliable option for Jacksonville, not counting his sophomore year which ended prematurely due to an ACL injury.
In 2021, Robinson had a career year and allowed just one sack in 856 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. He also earned his best pass-blocking grade since becoming a pro.

]]>The post Jags to Interview Doug Pederson and Jim Caldwell for their Head Coaching Vacancy appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>The first name on the list is Doug Pederson, who is certainly one of the most accomplished candidates available. Pederson served as a head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles for five years and has a Super Bowl win on his resume. During his time in Philly, he also led the Eagles to two NFC East titles and three playoff appearances while compiling a 42–37–1 record in the regular season.
Jacksonville also has an interest in former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell. He spent three years with the Colts and led the franchise to the postseason twice while accomplishing the same feat during his four years with the Lions. Caldwell’s most recent job in the NFL was serving as an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach for the Miami Dolphins in 2019.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is also believed to be among potential candidates. Leftwich is highly-respected in the NFL while also having a connection with the Jaguars. He was the franchise’s quarterback for four years between 2003 and 2006, starting 44 games in the Jags’ uniform.
The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Urban Meyer to be their next franchise head coach even though Meyer never coached in NFL. The move backfired as Meyer got involved in several off-the-field controversies while failing to deliver on the field. The Jags had it enough with Meyer after 13 games and fired him while installing offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

]]>The Jags found themselves down 13-3 late in the first half but managed to turn the game around by scoring two touchdowns. The first one was especially impressive, with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence connecting with Marvin Jones Jr. for a 28-yard score.
The Dolphins went ahead again in the fourth quarter after QB Tua Tagovailoa, playing in his first game since Week 2, led a quick 91-yard drive that ended with him throwing a TD pass to rookie Jaylen Waddle.
After the two teams exchanged punts, Jacksonville tied the game 20-20 with a 54-yarder from Matthew Wright. This was the longest field goal for Wright at both collegiate and professional levels.
Miami took possession of the ball once again with less than four minutes left in regulation and managed to get to their own 46-yard line before facing a 4th&1. The Dolphins decided to go for it, but the Jags’ defense came up big and made the stop to force a turnover on downs.
The Jaguars managed to make it hard for themselves as a false start penalty and a sack pushed them all the way to their own 44 yards. Facing a 3rd&20, Lawrence completed a 12-yard pass for wideout Laviska Shenault, but it was still not enough for a realistic field goal attempt.
At that point, the Jags let the clock get down to five seconds, and it seemed they would be attempting a Hail Mary pass. But instead, Lawrence once again found Shenault for a 9-yard gain and a new set of first downs. Jacksonville called a timeout to stop the clock at 0:01 and give Wright a chance to end the game with a 53-yard attempt.
The UCF product once again came through and sent the ball between the uprights to make it 23:20 and kickstart a huge celebration on the Jags’ sidelines.
“Obviously, there’s still so much more work to do, but it feels good to get a win,” said Lawrence after the game. “I wasn’t a part of the other 15 [losses], but I was a part of the first five here. We hate losing. It’s been tough… So to get a win and especially in that fashion, I mean, it’s just crazy, so it feels good.”

]]>Despite taking over the Jaguars less than nine months ago, Meyer was recently mentioned as one of the candidates for the USC head coaching job after the school fired Clay Helton. But speaking with the Jacksonville media, the three-time national champion said there is “no chance” he will return to college football anytime soon.
“I’m here and committed to trying to build this organization,” Meyer added.
Since being named the head coach of the Jaguars, Meyer had to deal with several controversies. This included the hiring of disgraced strength and conditioning coordinator Chris Doyle, who ended up resigning after just one day on the job and signing former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow to play tight end only to release him midway through the preseason.
Meyer also didn’t excel in his first regular-season game as an NFL head coach, with the Jaguars looking poor in Week 1 matchup against the Houston Texans and suffering a 37-21 loss.
During his career as a college head coach, Meyer had stints with Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State. He won two championships with the Gators and one with the Buckeyes while compiling 187–32 NCAA record.

]]>Etienne got hurt in Monday’s preseason game against New Orleans Saints, being forced to leave the field after playing just three downs. The Jags initially assumed that the 22-year-old running back is dealing with a sprain after his X-ray results came back negative. However, further testing revealed a Lisfranc injury that requires surgery.
According to NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport, Etienne’s initial recovery timeline was 12 weeks, which would give the player an opportunity to return at some point in 2021. Still, the Jags opted to place him on injured reserve and postpone his pro debut until next year.
Travis Etienne was a productive player at college, rushing for 4,952 yards on 7.2 yards per carry and 70 touchdowns in four years with Clemson. He also emerged as a weapon in the passing game in his last two college seasons, totaling 85 catches for 1,020 yards and six TDs.
Etienne’s ability to contribute on the ground and in the air was one of the major reasons why the Jags drafted him 25th overall in 2021. The team’s new head coach Urban Meyer frequently mentioned how he envisions him as a hybrid back that will get reps both behind the line of scrimmage and on the wide receiver position.
The Jags are now forced to adjust their game plan and find other contributors while we have to wait for 2022 to see Meyer’s plan in action.
