Los Angeles has become the third major U.S. city to impose a strict COVID-19 vaccine mandate, following the example of New York City and San Francisco. Passed by the Los Angeles City Council, the mandate requires all visitors to indoor gyms and other facilities to be fully vaccinated in order to be granted entry. The order will go into effect on November 29.

Despite the widespread nature of this mandate, the Staples Center, home to the Los Angeles Lakers, is said to be unaffected by it. The Staples Center, along with the Microsoft Theatre, “are already subject to an existing LACDPH order addressing this subject matter,” Staples Center officials revealed in a statement.

In order to be granted access to the Staples Center, Lakers fans will have the choice of either producing proof of being vaccinated or providing a negative COVID-19 test result dated less than 72 hours before the time of arrival into the facility.

In addition to being subject to these more flexible requirements, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka revealed in a media session that the entire Los Angeles Lakers roster will be fully vaccinated by the time that the new NBA season gets underway.

According to league sources, the NBA has reached a 95% vaccination rate for all its players. This indicates a steady rise in vaccinations since the start of training camps this week. The figure includes those players who have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The rise in the league’s vaccination rate is largely believed to be influenced by the NBA’s announcement earlier in the week, in which the league stated that unvaccinated players who miss games in New York City and San Francisco due to local vaccination mandates will lose out on their salary as well.

The NBA and the Players Association agreed on a strict set of rules for players to follow regarding COVID-19 vaccinations. According to these rules, players who have not been vaccinated will be required to follow many of the same restrictions that guided the behavior of the entire league last season, before COVID-19 vaccines have become available.

On the other hand, vaccinated players will benefit from the easing of restrictions, which includes no longer having to undergo daily coronavirus testing.

The local vaccination mandates of New York City and San Francisco apply only to those players who play in those areas. Any unvaccinated player who misses out on games in those areas will not be compensated for the games they miss.

NBA executive vice president of communications Mike Bass announced on Wednesday morning that unvaccinated players who miss games because of local vaccination requirements in New York City and San Francisco will not be compensated for the games they miss. “Any player who elects not to comply with local vaccination mandates will not be paid for games that he misses,” Bass confirmed in a statement.

New York City’s vaccination mandate stipulates that one must have received at least one COVID-19 vaccination shot in order to enter a stadium. San Francisco, on the other hand, requires a person to be fully vaccinated in order to be allowed entry. This order affects the Brooklyn Nets and the Golden State Warriors, NBA teams based in New York City and San Francisco, respectively.

Kylie Irving was missing from the Nets’ media day at the Barclays Center on Monday because of New York City’s new order, while Andrew Wiggins was unable to attend the Warriors’ media day, simply commenting that his vaccination status was “private” upon being questioned about his absence.

The New York Knicks, which is also subject to a local vaccination mandate, announced that the entire organization is already fully vaccinated, including the players.

The NBA announced on Friday that Andrew Wiggins’ request for vaccination exemption had been declined. The 26-year-old Golden State Warrior applied for exemption from a COVID-19 vaccination on religious grounds.

According to local coronavirus regulations in San Francisco, Golden State Warriors players are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to play their home games unless a medical or religious exemption is granted.

The NBA’s decision to decline Wiggins’ request was made clear by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, which released the following statement: “Under the current order, if unvaccinated, they cannot enter indoor areas regardless of the reason they are unvaccinated and cannot test out of this requirement even if they have a medical or religious exemption.”

While the NBA does allow unvaccinated players to play this season, these players will be required to undergo daily testing during practice days as well as travel days.

This rule is however overruled by the local guidelines enforced by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, which Wiggins and other players based in the city are subject to. Until such time as he is vaccinated against COVID-19, Wiggins will be ineligible to appear in home games.

After reaching an agreement with the National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA), the NBA will be requiring all referees to undergo vaccinations against the coronavirus in order to take to the court this season. Those who do so will also receive booster shots once they are eligible.

Prior to passing this requirement, the NBA waited on the approval of the NBRA, for which a vote was held. After a resounding vote in favor of the vaccination requirement, the NBA moved to enforce this rule.

The NBRA released the following statement on the matter: “This agreement was a win-win. It will support the NBA’s objective of creating a safer on-court environment and continuity of play while protecting the health and well-being of the referees.”

Should any referee refuse to undergo vaccinations on documented medical or religious grounds, he or she may apply for an exemption.

Prior to the agreement with the NBRA, the NBA announced to its teams that anyone who is in close proximity to referees, approximately 15 feet, would be required to vaccinate.

While players were not required to be vaccinated last season, the league engaged in a campaign to encourage them to do so. The campaign included relaxing safety protocols for vaccinated players, such as fewer mandated tests, more freedom on trips, and no quarantine requirements following contact tracing.

While LeBron James and Jimmy Butler have produced jaw-dropping performances in this year’s NBA Finals between the LA Lakers and Miami Heat, television viewership figures for basketball’s greatest spectacle have remained dismally low.

While Game One of last year’s NBA Finals drew in a television audience of 13.4 million people, Game One of this year’s Finals had just 7.41 million viewers, according to the Sports Watch Media website and Yahoo! Sports. Game Two of the 2020 NBA Finals drew in 5.94 million viewers, paling in comparison to last year’s audience of 6.61 million people.

While there are several popular opinions surrounding the possible reasons for this decline in viewership, most industry experts attribute the latest decline in television ratings to the schedule disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Game One of this year’s NBA Finals clashed with Major League Baseball playoff games involving the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Game Three overlapped with the NFL’s traditional “Sunday Night Football”.

“Going up head-to-head with the NFL and MLB post-season is a first, and the competition has had a negative effect on audience delivery,” media consultant Brad Adgate explained.

Former Fox Sports executive Patrick Crakes agreed with this statement, explaining, “It represents a highly fractionalized environment that is atypical for the NBA to air their finals in, against some pretty steep competition.”

Having been more than 140 days since corona virus brought a halt to professional basketball in the United States, the NBA is due to resume action on Friday.

The season is due to restart with an extensive number of health guidelines in place, which include the requirement for all players participating in the season restart to reside within the NBA “bubble” at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

In order to restrict the spread of coronavirus, only 22 of the existing 30 NBA franchises have been invited to participate in Orlando. Those teams with no chance of progressing to the playoffs, such as the Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks, have been excluded.

That being said, the Los Angeles Lakers’ key player Lebron James is one player to look out for as the NBA resumes. The 35-year-old player, now in his 17th season in the NBA, is on a mission to win the NBA Championships with his third unique franchise.

Unbelievably, James’ competition for this feat comes from Kawhi Leonard, who plays for the Lakers’ rivals Los Angeles Clippers. Leonard previously won the title the San Antonio Spurs after which he was crowned an NBA Champion with the Toronto Raptors last season.

With NBA players and staff living and working from within their Orlando bubble in the weeks leading up to the season restart, one could not blame them for undergoing feelings of isolation.

While NBA stars could not be blamed for going through feelings of isolation and frustration during such a challenging time, Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo remains optimistic and grateful.

He refuses to cave into the current circumstances, citing his escape from poverty in Greece and the achievement of his NBA dream as enough reason to celebrate.

“I’m in a situation where I’m extremely blessed and I cannot complain” Giannis explained. “Obviously, it doesn’t matter where you are in life, there’s always something to complain, there’s always a problem and an issue.”

But I try to kind of not focus on that. So as I said, my apartment in Greece, when I was younger, with my four brothers, was way smaller than the suite that I have in the hotel, so I’m just trying to enjoy the moment,” he continued.

Antetokounmpo is expected to play in Milwaukee’s opening game against the Boston Celtics on August 1st.

76ers coach Brett Brown expressed on Monday his delight with Ben Simmons’ performances in training. In recent training sessions at the NBA bubble in the Walt Disney World Resort, Brown has resorted to playing Simmons exclusively in the position of Power Forward.

During a conference call with reporters, Brown explained, “He’s so dynamic. “Let’s just talk about running. There’s nobody faster in the NBA. So to always have the ball and dribble it up against five guys … to do that dilutes some of his potent weapons. So, watching him fly up the floor, watching him and Joel [Embiid] play off each other, has been a really good look. I think they’ve been fantastic together.”

76ers fans, who have expressed much anxiety over the chemistry between Simmons and Embiid over the past three seasons.

Standing at 6-foot-10 with plenty of skill and athleticism, Simmons is a versatile player with the ability to play in any position on the court.

Simmons himself expressed confidence in his abilities, stating “I feel like I have a very high IQ on the court and see things a lot differently and can pass the ball very well, so that’s a threat.”

Brooklyn Nets shooting guard Spencer Dinwiddie announced vía his Twitter account on Tuesday that he would not be participating in the NBA’s restart in Orlando, Florida later this month.

Dinwiddie, a regular starter for Brooklyn and one of the team’s main offensive threats, Dinwiddie has tested positive for COVID-19 twice over the past week.

Despite hopes that Dinwiddie would test negative and see his symptoms go away, it seems as if he is still in the process of beating the virus and it simply wouldn’t be safe for him to rejoin his team.

Dinwiddie becomes the second key Nets player, alongside center DeAndre Jordan, who will not play in the season restart due to the coronavirus.

Dinwiddie has averaged 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per game for the Nets this season, who are currently in 7th place in the Eastern Conference and in position to make the playoffs.

If the team is able to close out the regular season with a playoff berth, they will undoubtedly find it difficult to overcome the absences of Jordan and Dinwiddie against a higher-seeded team.

For now, however, Nets fans and basketball fans in general are just hoping that Dinwiddie feels better soon and will be back and ready for next NBA season.
