FIFA’s Global Transfer Report revealed on Thursday that English soccer clubs spent more than $2 billion on transfers in 2022; the first time that this amount has been hit in history. In addition, a record number of male and female transfers were completed.

Internationally, the 20,209 male player transfers conducted in 2022 represent an 11.6% rise from the previous year, while transfers involving female players almost doubled since 2018. English clubs topped the list in both categories for the most transfer funds spent.

Emilio Garcia Silvero, FIFA’s Chief Legal and Compliance officer, acknowledged that English transfer spending helped to rebound international figures following a two-year slump.

“The two-year negative trend in clubs’ spending on transfer fees was turned around in 2022, with last year’s total outlay reaching $6.5bn (£5.24bn), an increase of 33.5% compared to 2021, yet still below the all-time high of 2019,” Silvero explained.

Silvero also revealed that the number of clubs involved in international, cross-border transfers rose from 410 in 2021 to 500 in 2022; a 22% increase.

French forward Antoine Griezmann is ending his disappointing stint with Barcelona and is set to return to Atletico Madrid, according to multiple reports. Griezmann will initially join Atletico on loan while the club has an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Barcelona was keen to part ways with Griezmann, one of the club’s highest earners, as part of efforts to slash their huge wage bill. They initially approached Atletico with a swap proposal, wanting to get talented midfielder Joao Felix in return.

Atletico weren’t interested in parting with Felix but were prepared to take Griezmann off Barca’s hand. They ended up agreeing to pay $12 million for a season-long loan and $47 million if they decide to trigger their purchase option.

Barcelona reportedly already has a low-cost replacement for Griezmann lined up. They are expected to sign Sevilla’s Luuk de Jong on loan. Atletico, on the other hand, cleared their books by shipping midfielder Saul Niguez to Chelsea on loan with the option to buy type of deal.

Antoine Griezmann joined Barcelona in 2019 after the club paid his $140 million buyout clause. During his time at Camp Nou, Griezmann failed to justify his big transfer fee and struggled to make an impact. He only managed to score 35 goals in 102 appearances with the Catalan club and only has the Copa Del Rey trophy to show for.

Griezmann was previously considered one of the premier forwards in soccer during his first stint with Atletico Madrid. He scored 133 goals in his five seasons with the club while helping Atletico win three trophies, including UEFA Europa League in 2018.

Brazilian attacking midfielder Willian is returning home. The 33-year-old star will sign with Brazil’s Série A side Corinthians after agreeing to a mutual contract termination with Arsenal.

Willian will leave Arsenal despite having two years left on the contract that paid him around $330,000 per week. The Premier League club confirmed the move on their official social media.

“He had two more years to run on his contract, but following positive and constructive recent discussions with him and his team, he will be leaving for a new opportunity with Corinthians in Brazil, where he began his career,” said the club in a statement. “Everyone at Arsenal wishes Willian and his family well for the future.”

Willian joined Arsenal as a marquee free agent last summer after previously spending seven years with the club’s cross-town rivals Chelsea. He was expected to be one of the key players at Emirates Stadium upon his arrival but managed only one goal and seven assists in all competitions in 2020-21.

However, Willian isn’t the only one to blame for his unsuccessful stint with Arsenal. The team struggled as a whole last season, while manager Mikel Arteta didn’t do him any favors as well. Arteta failed to play Willian consistently at his natural position and didn’t manage to find the best way to use him.

Willian spent his entire youth career with the Corinthians while also playing two seasons for the first team before making a transfer to Shakhtar Donetsk in 2007. He also had a brief stint with Anzhi Makhachkala before securing a move to Chelsea.

Christian Eriksen’s nightmare with Inter Milan might come to an end soon. According to the club’s CEO Giuseppe Marotta, Eriksen will be free to leave Seria A giants in January.

“Is Eriksen on the market? I’d say so, yes,” said Marotta in a chat with Sky Italy on Thursday.

Since his arrival to Italy in January, Eriksen struggled to settle in with Inter and find playing time under head coach Antonio Conte. This was especially the case this season when he made just four starts while his other appearances were mostly garbage minutes.

According to Marotta, the club is aware that Eriksen isn’t playing as much as he should and is willing to send him elsewhere.

“Obviously, we will need to find a solution,” he added.

Christian Eriksen built a reputation as one of the best midfielders in the game during seven years with Tottenham Spurs, but the fact that the club wasn’t competent enough made him want to leave.

He picked Inter among other suitors, believing he could propel the club over the edge and help them challenge for the Seria A title. Having the 28-year-old star was also reportedly a big wish of Inter president Zhang Kangyang.

However, Antonio Conte wasn’t so high on Eriksen and would often overlook him in favor of less creative but more defensive-minded midfielders. This especially became the case when Conte managed to get one of his favorite players in Arturo Vidal, who immediately became a starter over Eriksen despite his short fuse and other shortcomings.

Eriksen will now look to resurrect his career elsewhere, with Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal being among interested clubs.

Chelsea and English international midfielder Ross Barkley is due to join Aston Villa on a season-long loan for the 2020/21 season.

Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge in 2018, Barkley has struggled to hit top form and has been unable to secure a spot in the starting eleven. This loan provides him with the opportunity to enjoy some first-team football.

Barkley’s current predicament is a stark contrast to the way things were when he first burst onto the Premier League scene as a teenager.

The dynamic playing style that Barkley exhibited in his 179 appearances for Everton made him one of the league’s top transfer targets, thus leading to The Blues forking out $19 million for the player.

Unfortunately, a combination of injuries and poor runs of form led to Barkley falling out of favor with Chelsea.

Aston Villa, on the other hand, is chuffed to have secured the services of one such talented player. “Capturing a player of Ross’s quality is a real coup for our club and I am certain he will thrive here and improve our team,” Aston Villa manager Dean Smith told his club’s official website.

Benfica manager Jorge Jesus, as well as Ruben Dias himself, have hinted at the Portuguese defender’s likely transfer to Premier League giants Manchester City.

After his side’s 2-0 victory against Portuguese Primeira Liga side Moreirense, Dias appeared emotional in his post-match interview, as he explained, “I am very happy. It was a very important game for me and to be able to consecrate the game with a goal, it was very special for me. It is a special moment and I think everyone already knows why.”

This game was potentially the final game for Dias in a Benfica shirt should his transfer to Man City go through. In addition to captaining his side on the day, Dias scored the opening goal of the game.

According to several sources, Dias’ transfer would likely be a swap deal, with current Man City defender Nicolas Otamendi joining Benfica in return.

When questioned about Otamendi, Benfica boss Jesus stated his opinion clearly, “Otamendi? He is a player who has already shown his worth at FC Porto, he is a player of the Argentine national team and has always been a starter at Manchester City, he just stopped being now. If I have a choice, I want Rúben. But if I have to have Otamendi, I’m satisfied. In Portugal, he has justified all his value and Pep must not be stupid. If you want Rúben and let Otamendi come here, you should see what we all see.”

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is undergoing a medical with the club, prior to closing a $29 million move to Stamford Bridge.

When asked for an update by reporters, Lampard had the following to say, “He is having a medical as we speak. Subject to that being okay, then he will be a Chelsea player.” This news comes after much media speculation surrounding the Blues’ interest in the Rennes shot-stopper.

This move comes as the club’s patience for current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga continues to run thin. While he remains the most expensive goalkeeper in the world, the 25-year-old player has struggled at the London club in recent times. In Chelsea’s last outing, Kepa made a costly error that resulted in a Liverpool goal, and by extension, a humiliating home defeat.

All personal feelings aside, Lampard insists that Kepa still has an opportunity to prove himself at Chelsea. “I don’t know what benefits there are in the long run, football is in your hands. Competition is a regular thing. We have brought Mendy in for that competition. It’s in everyone’s hands to get into the squad. I think it is the hardest position, because of the individual nature of it. I have to be sympathetic to that point. Last year I changed a few times, it’s a different thought process. We are always striving for the best performance.”

Portuguese international left-back Nelson Semedo confirmed his departure from FC Barcelona, putting an end to weeks of speculation. He took to Instagram to post a farewell message to the La Liga giants.

His message explains, “Thank you very much, Barcelona for giving me the opportunity to live the dream of wearing this shirt, of playing in Camp Nou, of learning and enjoying the best in the world. Thank you for making me grow as a player and as a person. These were three wonderful years that I will never forget. Thank you to my colleagues, staff, fans, and all the people who helped me since I arrived. I wish you the best of luck in the world. Eternally gratifying. Long live Barca!”

The 26-year-old player has been repeatedly linked with a move to Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, who will be looking to replace Matt Doherty following his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur. Wolves’ manager Nuno Espirito Santo emphasized the need for Wolves to sign more players following his team’s 3-1 loss at home to Manchester City.

While he refused to divulge any specific details regarding a possible move for Semedo, he did explain, “It’s important that we balance and straighten the squad. We saw today we had a problem, we need solutions.”

Semedo is rumored to have a price tag of $39 million.

In the high of this summer’s transfer season, news comes of a football player moving from Britain to Spain. The future of Kieran Trippier was unknown during the whole of June, but a move from his current team Tottenham was widely discussed. Finally, rumors may lay to rest as it was officially confirmed that the 28-year-old player will be joining the Spanish La Liga club Atletico Madrid.

It was reported that the player is undergoing a medical in Atletico Madrid after which the contract will be finalized by the two involved sides. This four-year contract will come at a fee of around $24.8 million which is not pretty spectacular considering the previous acquirements of the Spanish Club.

Since the transfer of Griezmann to Barcelona brought the club more than $130 million, it seems they got into really heavy spending considering the fact that this reinforcement comes after the acquirement of Jao Felix and Marcos Llorente which together had cost Atletico more than $184 million.

Trippier has had a great career so far, starting it back in 2009 playing for Manchester City. After City, he played in Barnsley and Burnley before being signed by his current team in 2015.
