The post Marketa Vondrousova Upsets Ons Jabeur to Win the 2023 Wimbledon appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Vondrousova, who is ranked 42nd in the WTA rankings, became the first unseeded woman to make the finals at Wimbledon in the past six decades. She is now also the lowest-ranked woman to claim the Wimbledon title.
âAfter everything Iâve been through, itâs amazing I can stand here and hold this,â Vondrousova said after the match. âTennis is crazy.â
Several years ago, Vondrousova was considered one of the next big tennis stars. She reached No. 14 in the world in 2019 and played French Open finals. What followed was a series of injuries and setbacks that derailed the 24-year-old playerâs career.Â
However, it appears that Vondrousova left all the troubles behind and is now on the right track once again.
âThe comebacks arenât easy,â she added. âYou never know what to expect, and after the second one, I was playing the small tournaments, and I was hoping I could come back at this level, and now this is happening.â
For her opponent, it was a different kind of story. Jabeur has now lost the Wimbledon finals for two straight years and has three Grand Slam finals but is yet to win a title.
âI think this is the most painful loss of my career,â Jabeur said. âItâs going to be a tough day for me today, but I am going to come back stronger and win a Grand Slam. I promise to win this tournament.â

]]>Rybakina, playing her first Grand Slam finals, had a rough opening of the match. Her shots were not falling, and it seemed Jabeur would have an easy job ahead of her after winning the first set 6-3. Then something happened.
In the second set, Rybakina started leaning on her forehand and powerful serve. This shift immediately gave results as she got comfortable and more confident. The 23-year-old Kazakhstani won the second set 6-2 and then proceeded to dominate the deciding third set in the same manner to claim her first Grand Slam title.
Rybakina became the first woman who managed to recover from a one-set deficit in the Grand Slam finals to win the tournament since Amélie Mauresmo at 2006 Wimbledon. She is also the second lowest-ranked woman to win at the All England Club since rankings were introduced in 1975.
Djokovic also faced a one-set deficit against Kyrgios, but his run at this year’s Wimbledon showed that shouldn’t be an issue. The Serbian lost the first sets in both quarterfinals and semis before coming back. And it was more of the same in the finals.
After losing the first set 6-4, Djokovic bounced back with 6-3 and 6-4 wins in the second and third set, respectively. The fourth set saw him and Kyrgios holding on to their respective serves, resulting in a tiebreak.
Just like many times before, Djokovic couldn’t be cooler under pressure. He set the tone by breaking Kyrgios’ serve at the start of the tiebreak and then cruised to a 6-1 lead and five match points. Kyrgios saved two, but his resistance ended there, and it was time for Djokovic to start celebrating.
This was Djokovic’s 21st Grand Slam title and seventh Wimbledon win.

]]>Swiatek came into the game as a clear favorite, but she couldnât stand her ground to the 37th-ranked Cornet. She easily defeated her in two sets, 6-4 6-2, and is set to face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in her next match.
Despite the fact it ended her long winning streak, the loss at Wimbledon wasnât a huge shocker for Swiatek because she never felt as comfortable on the grass as the clay and hard surfaces.
âI tried many things to feel better on court, on grass court, but it didn’t really work out⊠I know I didn’t play good tennis. I was pretty confused about my tactics. As a solid player, she used that pretty well. For sure, it wasn’t a good performance for me,â said the 21-year-old Polish player after the match.
It also didnât help Swiatekâs case that she didnât play a grass tournament before heading to Wimbledon. She took a break to recover mentally and deal with a shoulder injury following her victory at Roland Garros.

]]>History repeated itself for Williams at Wimbledon because she lost in the first round last year, as well. She took a year-long break to recover from a leg injury and announced sheâll be making a comeback at the All England Club, but she didnât stick around at Wimbledon for too long.
The 40-year-old tennis legend still showed signs of greatness, but she couldnât stand her ground against Tan, who defeated her in three intense sets. She already has seven Wimbledon singles titles under her belt, and sheâs chasing Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.
The loss at Wimbledon didnât discourage Williams, and sheâs not sure if this is the last time that weâll see her at the All England Club. Sheâs got her eyes set on the US Open right now, and sheâs hoping sheâll be able to play at her home major.
“I mean, when you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam [in 1999], is something that’s always super special. There’s definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home,” said Williams.

The 2022 Wimbledon Championship is set to take place between June 27 and July 10 at the All England Club in London. Osaka’s exit from Wimbledon isnât a huge shocker since she previously mentioned she might miss the tournament in an interview at the French Open. The 24-year-old player explained sheâs not as motivated to compete because Wimbledon feels âlike an exhibitionâ after it was stripped of the ranking points in the face of its polarizing Russian ban.
2022 has been a rocky year for Osaka, who dropped to no. 43 in the WTA rankings after taking several breaks from tennis. She most recently took part in the French Open last month but lost to Amanda Anisimova in the very first round.

Serena Williams has won Wimbledon seven times so far, her last being the Wimbledon in 2016. With this yearâs Wimbledon cup, the American who currently has 23 Grand Slam singles titles will attempt to equal the record of 24 held by the Australian former world No.1 Margaret Court.
