Unseeded Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova is the 2023 Wimbledon champion. Vondrousova won the Grand Slam, the first in her career, in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) against No. 6 Ons Jabeur.

Vondrousova, who is ranked 42nd in the WTA rankings, became the first unseeded woman to make the finals at Wimbledon in the past six decades. She is now also the lowest-ranked woman to claim the Wimbledon title.

“After everything I’ve been through, it’s amazing I can stand here and hold this,” Vondrousova said after the match. “Tennis is crazy.”

Several years ago, Vondrousova was considered one of the next big tennis stars. She reached No. 14 in the world in 2019 and played French Open finals. What followed was a series of injuries and setbacks that derailed the 24-year-old player’s career.

However, it appears that Vondrousova left all the troubles behind and is now on the right track once again.

“The comebacks aren’t easy,” she added. “You never know what to expect, and after the second one, I was playing the small tournaments, and I was hoping I could come back at this level, and now this is happening.”

For her opponent, it was a different kind of story. Jabeur has now lost the Wimbledon finals for two straight years and has three Grand Slam finals but is yet to win a title.

“I think this is the most painful loss of my career,” Jabeur said. “It’s going to be a tough day for me today, but I am going to come back stronger and win a Grand Slam. I promise to win this tournament.”

The No. 17 seed Elena Rybakina surprised the tennis world by beating the favored Ons Jabeur and becoming the 2022 Wimbledon champion. In men’s singles, it was business as usual for Novak Djokovic, who beat the Australian Nick Kyrgios to win his fourth consecutive title at the All England Club.

Rybakina, playing her first Grand Slam finals, had a rough opening of the match. Her shots were not falling, and it seemed Jabeur would have an easy job ahead of her after winning the first set 6-3. Then something happened.

In the second set, Rybakina started leaning on her forehand and powerful serve. This shift immediately gave results as she got comfortable and more confident. The 23-year-old Kazakhstani won the second set 6-2 and then proceeded to dominate the deciding third set in the same manner to claim her first Grand Slam title.

Rybakina became the first woman who managed to recover from a one-set deficit in the Grand Slam finals to win the tournament since Amélie Mauresmo at 2006 Wimbledon. She is also the second lowest-ranked woman to win at the All England Club since rankings were introduced in 1975.

Djokovic also faced a one-set deficit against Kyrgios, but his run at this year’s Wimbledon showed that shouldn’t be an issue. The Serbian lost the first sets in both quarterfinals and semis before coming back. And it was more of the same in the finals.

After losing the first set 6-4, Djokovic bounced back with 6-3 and 6-4 wins in the second and third set, respectively. The fourth set saw him and Kyrgios holding on to their respective serves, resulting in a tiebreak.

Just like many times before, Djokovic couldn’t be cooler under pressure. He set the tone by breaking Kyrgios’ serve at the start of the tiebreak and then cruised to a 6-1 lead and five match points. Kyrgios saved two, but his resistance ended there, and it was time for Djokovic to start celebrating.

This was Djokovic’s 21st Grand Slam title and seventh Wimbledon win.

Iga Swiatek came into this year’s Wimbledon as a world no. 1 following her triumph at the French Open, but she didn’t repeat the same kind of success at this tournament. Her 37-match winning streak ended after she lost to the French player Alize Cornet in round three.

Swiatek came into the game as a clear favorite, but she couldn’t stand her ground to the 37th-ranked Cornet. She easily defeated her in two sets, 6-4 6-2, and is set to face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in her next match.

Despite the fact it ended her long winning streak, the loss at Wimbledon wasn’t a huge shocker for Swiatek because she never felt as comfortable on the grass as the clay and hard surfaces.

“I tried many things to feel better on court, on grass court, but it didn’t really work out
I know I didn’t play good tennis. I was pretty confused about my tactics. As a solid player, she used that pretty well. For sure, it wasn’t a good performance for me,” said the 21-year-old Polish player after the match.

It also didn’t help Swiatek’s case that she didn’t play a grass tournament before heading to Wimbledon. She took a break to recover mentally and deal with a shoulder injury following her victory at Roland Garros.

This year’s Wimbledon was supposed to mark a big comeback for Serena Williams, but her time at the tournament was cut short. She was defeated by Harmony Tan in the very first round, so what does the future hold for her after this disappointing loss?

History repeated itself for Williams at Wimbledon because she lost in the first round last year, as well. She took a year-long break to recover from a leg injury and announced she’ll be making a comeback at the All England Club, but she didn’t stick around at Wimbledon for too long.

The 40-year-old tennis legend still showed signs of greatness, but she couldn’t stand her ground against Tan, who defeated her in three intense sets. She already has seven Wimbledon singles titles under her belt, and she’s chasing Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

The loss at Wimbledon didn’t discourage Williams, and she’s not sure if this is the last time that we’ll see her at the All England Club. She’s got her eyes set on the US Open right now, and she’s hoping she’ll be able to play at her home major.

“I mean, when you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam [in 1999], is something that’s always super special. There’s definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home,” said Williams.

Wimbledon is coming back to London later this month, but Naomi Osaka isn’t one of the players we’ll get to see on the tennis court. The four-time Grand Slam champion announced she’ll miss the tournament due to an Achilles injury.

Osaka announced her exit from Wimbledon in a social media post, where she reflected on her state of mind and explained that she’s trying to find a silver lining in a negative situation.

“After a storm comes the calm. This is a saying that I’m actively trying to master. II feel like life keeps dealing cards and you’re never gonna be used to them but it’s how you adapt to uncomfortable situations that really says stuff about your character,” wrote Osaka.

The 2022 Wimbledon Championship is set to take place between June 27 and July 10 at the All England Club in London. Osaka’s exit from Wimbledon isn’t a huge shocker since she previously mentioned she might miss the tournament in an interview at the French Open. The 24-year-old player explained she’s not as motivated to compete because Wimbledon feels “like an exhibition” after it was stripped of the ranking points in the face of its polarizing Russian ban.

2022 has been a rocky year for Osaka, who dropped to no. 43 in the WTA rankings after taking several breaks from tennis. She most recently took part in the French Open last month but lost to Amanda Anisimova in the very first round.

The eyes of the whole world were directed towards the United Kingdom this weekend and no one was disappointed since Wimbledon and Silverstone gave us great and exciting sports events that were definitely worth everyone’s time.

After a nerve-wracking struggle, the fantastic Novak Djokovic succeeded at beating one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Roger Federer, thereby winning his fifth title at Wimbledon. The match was one of the most impressive sports events of all times and it lasted 4 hours and 57 minutes before Djokovic won it with a quite rare score of 7-6(5) 1-6 7-6(4) 4-6 13-12(3).

The crowd was almost unanimously cheering for the 37-year-old Federer, even clapped at some of Djokovic’s misses, which evidently made him quite frustrated and nervous. But that wasn’t enough to stop Djokovic, who despite everything managed to handle himself well and still performed phenomenally, making it seem like the frustration made him fight even more fiercely. In the end, his determination and focus led him to one of the most stunning victories of his career.

Djokovic said that this was one of the most exciting and thrilling finals he has competed in.

As Wimbledon progresses, some players are going forward towards the title and some are dropping out, making outcomes more expected and evident. The world tennis legend Roger Federer had his 99th victory at Wimbledon managing to destroy Matteo Berrettini, beating him with 6-1, 6-2, and 6-2.

During the one hour and thirteen minutes long match Roger Federer beat the 23-year-old Italian player with such skill that it seemed almost too easy. And truly it may be considered one of the easiest victories that the Swiss veteran has achieved in his long and prosperous career showing once again why he is one of the best tennis players of all time.

Joana Konta is another great tennis player whose victory didn’t surprise anyone. The 28-year-old British number one beat the Czech Petra Kvitova finishing her with a score of 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4. With this, she reached the quarter-finals and next she will be facing another Czech player, 33-year-old Barbora Strycova. After the match, she said that she was tremendously grateful to be here and that she was just happy to still be in this event and compete against the best players in the world.

This season tennis showed a great number of very young and very talented new players who disputed great champions and even disqualified them showing great skills and determination.

One such talented teenager which was ranked world number 133, showed stunning play even though she was beaten by the American Serena Williams. The 7-time Wimbledon champion was surprised when the young Kaja Juvan managed to win the first set. The interesting match lasted one hour and thirty-six minutes and finished with a score of 2-6, 6-2 and 6-4 taking Williams to the next round where she will stand against the German Julia Gorges.

Serena Williams has won Wimbledon seven times so far, her last being the Wimbledon in 2016. With this year’s Wimbledon cup, the American who currently has 23 Grand Slam singles titles will attempt to equal the record of 24 held by the Australian former world No.1 Margaret Court.

Another surprising moment of the match was the arrival of Meghan Markle. The Duchess of Sussex arrived at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club to support Williams who has been her friend for more than a decade.

Wimbledon has again proved to be the center not just of great sportsmanship, but also of great entertainment, hosting another clash of two great tennis players. This time it was the tense struggle between Rafael Nadal and the Australian Nick Kyrgios whose controversial behavior sparked a reaction among tennis fans around the world. Besides all the trouble, Nadal once again managed to prove himself on the tennis court, beating the Australian despite his intense and aggressive play.

The Spaniard won the match with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) and in his next match he will be facing the French player Wilfried Tsonga.

The match was pretty interesting to watch since the two players invested great efforts and it really seemed like they were giving their all to win the game. The 24-year-old Kyrgios seemed pretty irritated and was quite loud on the court as his continuous arguing made the chair umpire hand him an official warning. Also, he directed a strong forehand to Nadal’s chest, which the Spaniard managed to deflect with his racquet. Later Kyrgios stated that he felt there was no need to apologize to Nadal for that outburst.

This year’s Wimbledon was supposed to mark a big comeback for Serena Williams, but her time at the tournament was cut short. She was defeated by Harmony Tan in the very first round, so what does the future hold for her after this disappointing loss?
