Liverpool were eliminated from the Europa League on Thursday night by Serie A side Atalanta. While the Reds came out 1-0 winners on the night courtesy of a Mohamed Salah penalty, Atalanta’s 3-0 victory at Anfield meant that the win would not be enough as Liverpool lost the quarterfinal clash 3-1 on aggregate.

Despite the disappointing exit, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp appeared adamant to remain optimistic and focus on the road ahead. “Disappointed that we did not go through but not frustrated or angry. Now we can focus on the league and that’s what we will do,” Klopp stated, adding that the team will need to regain their focus in time to face Fulham in their next Premier League match.

In what is to be Klopp’s last season with Liverpool, his team remains in the race to win this season’s Premier League crown. The Reds currently sit in third place with 71 points, tied with second-placed Arsenal and just two points behind Manchester City.

Manchester United was held to a 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal clash on Thursday night. The crowd at Old Trafford was speechless as Man Utd scored two own goals to give up a two-goal lead and miss out on what would have been a crucial home victory.

The hosts got their game off to an ideal start when central midfielder Marcel Sabitzer scored in the 14th minute. Five minutes later, Sabitzer found the back of the net again to put the Red Devils firmly in the driving seat.

While anything but a win seemed unlikely for the Premier League side, they were unexpectedly caught off guard in the 84th minute when defender Tyrell Malacia turned a Jesus Navas cross into his own net.

In an incident that proved that lightning could indeed strike twice, substitute Harry Maguire accidentally headered the ball into the back of his own net in the 92nd minute, thereby handing Sevilla a comeback at the death of the match.

Sevilla will host Man Utd at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium for the second leg on Thursday, April 20.

FC Barcelona is set to be without key midfielders Pedri and Gavi when they take on Manchester United in the second leg of their Europa League playoff at Old Trafford.

Gavi is suspended for the next game after he picked up a yellow card for a second consecutive game during the first leg while Pedri is expected to be sidelined for up to a month after picking up a hamstring injury during Thursday night’s 2-2 draw between the two sides.

While the draw means that both sides still have everything to play for, Barcelona will be at a disadvantage without two of its crucial players at center midfield, not to mention that it will be their turn to make an away trip.

“It’s a very significant loss but we’ll try not to let it show,” Barcelona manager Xavi stated after Thursday night’s draw. He’ll be looking toward Frenkie de Jong, Sergi Roberto, and Pablo Torre as potential alternatives.

Alejandro Garnacho scored his first professional goal for Manchester United in a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in the final game of the Europa League group stage.

Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag expressed his satisfaction with the 18-year-old winger’s performance, stating that “he was a threat, he scored a goal and did well defensively. It was a great finish, a great attack, and really enjoyable.”

The valuable away win at Sociedad is only Granacho’s second start for Man Utd, the first coming last week against FC Sheriff in the same competition.

Club legend Cristiano Ronaldo notably assisted Garnacho’s goal, with fans showing appreciation on social media for the way in which the veteran has supported Man Utd’s next generation. Ronaldo made his Man Utd debut as an 18-year-old almost 20 years ago, before Garnacho was born.

Despite the crucial victory, Manchester United was unable to snatch the top spot in Group E from Real Sociedad. While the teams ended the group stage tied on 15 points, the La Liga team emerged as the group winner due to having a superior goal difference to Man Utd.

While Sociedad will progress directly to the Europa League round of 16, the Red Devils will have to participate in a playoff round, where they will go up against a team that finished in third place in the Champions League group stage.

Arsenal and United States national team goalkeeper Matt Turner was missing from the Gunners’ squad for the Europa League clash with PSV Eindhoven on Thursday night due to incurring a groin injury. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta revealed that the backup goalkeeper was experiencing discomfort in his groin during training on Wednesday, resulting in first-choice goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale taking the field for the 2-0 loss.

Turner’s absence poses a concern for the United States Men’s National Team, particularly with the 2022 World Cup fast approaching. Still, Arteta insists that Turner’s discomfort is not a cause for panic, explaining, “Yesterday in training he had some discomfort in his groin, and he tried this morning but he was not well, so Aaron had to play. We have to assess it, but it did not look like a serious injury”.

Since arriving at Arsenal from the MLS side New England Revolution during the summer transfer window, Turner has made just four appearances for the Premier League team, each of which has been in the Europa League. So far, Turner has greatly impressed the Gunners, conceding just one goal and keeping three clean sheets as Arsenal rocketed to the top of their Europa League group.

Heading into their semi-final matchup against Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan was the clear favorite to win and advance to play Sevilla in the Europa League final on Friday night.

With their 5-0 win over the Ukranian giants, Inter proved that they are a force to be reckoned with and are now on the doorstep of bringing home their first trophy since the 2011 Coppa Italia.

Inter got off to a quick start, taking a 1-0 advantage after a Lautaro Martinez strike beat Shakhtar keeper Andriy Pyatov in the 19th minute. The Italians were unable to increase their lead before the break as their opposition did their best and held together defensively.

It looked as if the second half could be a tense affair until Danilo D’Ambrosio’s goal made it 2-0 in the 61st minute of the match. After that, the floodgates opened.

Lautaro found the net again in the 74th minute to put the game completely out of reach at 3-0, and then Romelu Lukaku scored a pair of goals in the 78th and 83rd minutes to push the scoreboard to a blowout 5-0 final.

It was a dominant performance by Inter, and they will look to take down Europa League giants Sevilla, the winner of the most titles in the competition’s history with five, on Friday night in Cologne.

Sevilla are the first team to secure a spot in this season’s Europa League final following their 2-1 defeat of Manchester United on Sunday night.

The game, which took place at the neutral RheinEnergieStadion, got off to a dramatic start, with Sevilla’s Diego Carlos fouling Marcus Rashford inside the box to hand the Red Devils a ninth-minute penalty. Bruno Fernandez showed no signs of wavering as he put the Premier League giants in the lead.

Sevilla did well to bite back, however, as Suso bested David de Gea to hand the La Liga outfit a 26th-minute equalizer. While Man Utd came out swinging after the half time break, Sevilla’s defense remained resolute as goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied Anthony Martial & Co on several occasions.

At the other end of the pitch, the Red Devils were once again punished for their defensive flaws, when Luuk de Jong swept home a cross from Jesus Navas to restore Sevilla’s lead with 12 minutes left to play. 2-1 it ended as Manchester United continued to be denied by Sevilla’s unwavering defense.

Sevilla has won five Europa League trophies; the most for any side. Notably, the Spanish team won three consecutive tournaments from 2014 to 2016. Sevilla will face either Inter Milan or Shakhtar Donetsk in the final on Friday night.

Inter Milan forward Alexis Sanchez remains in doubt for his side’s second leg of their Europa League semi-final clash with Bayer Leverkusen due to a hamstring injury, the club announced.

Having come on as a substitute in the 64th minute of his team’s 2-1 victory over Leverkusen in the first leg, Sanchez required treatment on his right hamstring shortly after. Despite his injury, he played for the remainder of the game.

Inter Milan’s official statement on Sanchez’s injury reads: “Alexis Sanchez underwent medical tests this morning in Duisburg after suffering an injury during our match against Bayer Leverkusen. The tests confirmed that he has suffered a strain in his right hamstring. His condition will continue to be reassessed over the next few days.”

This is not the first time that Sanchez has been injured since arriving at the San Siro from Manchester United. He was also ruled out of action for the last three months of 2019 due to an ankle injury.

Despite these setbacks, Sanchez has proven to be a valuable asset to the Serie A giants. He scored four goals and bagged 11 assists in 31 appearances for Inter this season. Due to his impressive showings on the pitch throughout his season-long loan, Inter decided to keep Sanchez at the San Siro on a permanent basis, inking a permanent deal with the Chilean just last week.

The Europa League quarter final stages got off to a flying start last night, with two intriguing matches taking place.

The first game of the night saw Serie A giants Inter Milan take on Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen. Inter came into the match fresh off an impressive 2-0 victory over La Liga side Getafe in what was their only leg of the clash due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Leverkusen, on the other hand, defeated Scottish giants Ranger 1-0, thereby winning 4-1 on aggregate.

The game got off to a quick start, with Inter opening the scoring through a Nicolo Barella strike in the 15th minute. Just six minutes later, Romelu Lukaku doubled the home team’s lead. In the 24th minute, Kai Havertz pulled one back for Leverkusen, however, the German team was unable to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game. 2-1 was the final scoreline.

Following their 7-1 drubbing of LASK on aggregate, Premier League giants Manchester United hosted Danish team FC Copenhagen. Despite getting 26 shots on goal, the Red Devils were unable to rattle the visitors. Ultimately, it took a 95th minute Bruno Fernandez penalty for Man Utd to grab the only goal of the game.
