The English giants were handed a two-year ban from European competitions, including the Champions League, as well as a 30 million pound fine from the governing body that oversees European soccer.

The club, who has seen a massive period of growth over the last decade after being purchased by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, a wealthy member of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates, allegedly took their spending too far and broke financial regulations in their signings of several players over the past few years.

al-Nahyan is accused of funneling money to Manchester City through the country’s flagship airline, Etihad, effectively “laundering” money that should not have been available to the team based on UEFA rules.

Portuguese national Rui Pinto is said to have discovered e-mails and documents proving Manchester City’s rule-breaking after hacking computers and publishing incriminating materials as part of the Football Leaks document dump.

Manchester City is now expected to appeal FIFA’s punishment and ruling, as the sentence handed down to them would severely hamper and weaken the club for years to come if upheld.

Manchester City’s winger Leroy Sane has suffered a knee injury during the match between City and Liverpool. The 23-year-old Sane has torn an anterior cruciate ligament and now he will have to undergo surgical intervention in Spain in the next few days.  

As Pep Guardiola has said, this is incredibly bad news for the club, as the young winger will certainly miss a great part of the football season. Guardiola said that he doesn’t know how long Sane may be out of the team and that normally this kind of injury takes players out of the field for six or seven years, hopefully until February or March.  

The German player injured his knee just 13 minutes after he entered the field at Wembley. During the summer season, a possible transfer to Bayern Munich was reported but this outcome of events will keep the player in City.

The Italian club is hoping to sell the player for a fee of around $66.4 million which will partly compensate for the $83.1 million signing of Matthijs de Ligt during this summer. Rodri started his professional career in 2015 in the Spanish club Villarreal where he played until 2018 when he was acquired by his former club Atletico Madrid.
